India ranks fifth in terms of exploitable hydro-potential on the global scenario. As per CEA estimates, India has hydro-power potential to the tune of 148,700 MW of installed capacity. But due to issues such as land acquisition, lack of skilled manpower and other issues it is estimated that only 25 per cent of capacity has been harnessed implying that nearly 75 per cent is yet to be harnessed, implying the vast potential in the Indian context. In 1998, the government had announced a policy for hydro power development to lend impetus to the segment. But has the thrust on hydro had the desired impact?
