New technology and R&D is key in order to fully understand market demand

How is the market trajectory in the segment like currently?
The Ministry of Power is looking at an investment of Rs 15,000 lakh crore over the next five years. This is a huge opportunity for a company like ours and the future looks bright if the proposed plans by the government takes shape. Shilpi Cable has been outperforming the industry and we hope to continue doing so, over the next five years as well. At present, from the power sector, SCTL´s 7 per cent revenue comes from the energy cables segment and 34 per cent from copper wire conductor business. New technologies and R&D by key players in order to understand market demand.

What has been the impact of renewables in this segment?
Future growth in this market is looks very positive with growth of infrastructure in the country. Also, with the governments pet projects there is a lot of demand of our products in the coming years and we are very optimistic about the sectors we are present in. The countries´ current power deficit and focus on renewables will be the biggest driver. With over 2,000 retail outlets and innovative product range, SCTL is entranced to be part of Make in India initiatives.

What is the impact of the unorganised sector?
The wire and cable market in India has come a long way, from being a small industry to a very large one, over the past decade. The industry is mostly volume driven, although it comes with a lot of technical and quality nuances. Over the last 20 years, the industry has shifted from being an unorganised sector to an organised one, although 35 per cent of the industry continues to be a part of the unorganised sector. The market has been growing steadily, and according to recent research at Netscribes, it is expected to touch Rs 572 billion by 2018. With the industry growing at a CAGR of 15 per cent as a result of growth in the power and infrastructure segments the present and the future of the sector looks promising. The wires and cables market of India has been characterised by a steady growth in demand with slight fluctuations, affected by economic turbulences. The industry is highly competitive with major proportion of the market being captured by few organized players.

What are the standards and provisions for fire safety when it comes to wires and cables?
For safety and reliability of electricity of users, the regulation standards are IS:694:2010. For fire safety in buildings, wire and cables are manufactured with flame self extinguishing property and to prevent short circuit due to insulation if cut by rat, it is anti-rodent.

What are the technologies that you have implemented in your products/services?
New product design and development is a crucial factor for the survival of a company like ours. In an industry that is changing fast, firms must continually revise their design and range of products. This is necessary due to continuous technology change, development, competition and the changing preference of customers. Currently, we are aggressively working on introduction of new products. We are planning to expand iand also introduce new products in our basket for B2C segment. Combined with our culture of continuous improvement and technical innovation, ee offer superior quality cables and create lasting relationships in the industry that will enhance our portfolio in the Indian, other Asian and African markets.

What is your emphasis on R&D in this segment?
We are experienced in constructing various cables and wires and have a broad portfolio of production facilities enabling us to realise special needs in a short time. The focus of development has been on the following products: automotive cables for higher operating temperature, automotive signalling cables with higher strain-bearing capacity for weight reduction in harnesses, automotive antenna and data cables, automotive sensor cables, automotive compact cable for lighter weight and increase fuel efficiency, automotive cables with aluminium wires with the appropriate contact systems, industrial bus-cables, flat lift control cables 8-form cable with special construction, and cables for communication channels. Our target is to meet the market requirement through technology development and fast operations.
