West Bengal's power plants possess record coal stock

In West Bengal, power plants this year have comfortable stocks of coal when compared to the same time last year. The power plants in the same time last year were struggling for coal with stock down to critical limit of four days. This year though, the scene is strikingly different with record coal stock at most units. The power situation in the state hasn't been this reassuring during summer for a long time.

Coal stocks at power plants in the state are at a 10-year high and it has remained so for the last few weeks. Consequently, the fuel situation is extremely comfortable this summer and monsoon, the State Power Secretary Moloy De said. While effective management of coal stock through improved monitoring of offload yards at thermal power stations has helped, Coal India's dispatch has also been higher than previous years.

The 14 thermal power generation units in the state have enough coal to generate power for a fortnight without replenishing the supply further. This time last year, the average stock period was four days. The average stock would have been even higher but for the low inventory at the Farakka unit of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).
