Surat civic body to set up 3rd wind plant
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has appointed a consultant for construction of its third wind power plant. The third plant with the capacity of 6.3 mw will cater to the electricity needs of Sarthana Water works and other water distribution centres of the city. SMC Standing Committee Chairman Rajesh Desai approved the appointment of the consultant Power and Energy Consultants, a Delhi based firm.
Desai said that SMC wants to be self-sufficient for its electricity needs, hence the civic body is in the process of increasing its power capacity." The consulting agency will not only operate and maintain the plant for a period of ten years but also supervise the work of a contractor and verify the electrical energy generated by wind power plant.
SMC already has functional wind power plant with a capacity of 3 MW set up at Adodar in Porbandar district of the state since 2010. It has produced 2.03 crore units of electricity in 31 month period and has saved Rs 7.93 crore from its electricity bills. Similarly, a second plant of 8.4 MW capacity is under construction and is on the verge of completion. The power generated from this plant will start taking care of electricity expenses of running Katargam water works in few months.
