ABB wins Rs 4,350 crore mega deal
In a partnership with state grid operator Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Powergrid) in a mega project worth over Rs 4,350 crore, ABB is set to deliver a transmission link that will have the capacity of 6,000 MW – the equivalent of more than six large power plants – to bring electricity to more than 80 million people.
The 800 kV UHVDC system will connect Raigarh in Central India to Pugalur in Tamil Nadu, covering 1,830 km - making it one of the longest transmission links in the world. The two-way link will integrate thermal and wind energy for transmission of power to high consumption centres located distances away, supporting electricity demands in the south, when wind strength is low, and transmitting clean energy to the north, when there is excess wind power.
Commenting on the development, Ulrich Spiesshofer, CEO, ABB said, “ABB is honoured to partner with Powergrid for this smart long distance transmission project. The company is strongly committed to India and with this new long distance transmission link, we are delivering benefits on the strength of our strong local manufacturing.”
