To achieve green development, TBEA will promote investment and development of renewable energy and integration of power electronics technology in India, says Zhang Xin, Chairman of the board, TBEA Co Ltd.
Can you tell us how much you have invested in the recently inaugurated facility in Gujarat? And what was the rationale behind selecting the State as your investment destination?
For the first phase, we have invested Rs 1,000 crore. In addition, we will be investing Rs 500 crore in the second phase. The unit at Vadodara will cater to high voltage transformers and the renewable energy sector. The second phase will be an extension and we have all the necessary requirements such as land, permission from local authority, etc., in place. Meanwhile, the new facility will cater to the domestic as well as international demand where we will manufacture high voltage transformers (765 kV) and reactors (765 kV).
As far as your question on why Gujarat? The way Gujarat has developed over the years, and with their investment friendly behaviour, it was easy for company like us to set up an entire unit. This was possible because of the single window clearance system in the State.
The establishment of TBEA Green Energy Park at Vadodara is a significant step for the international operations of TBEA. As one important part of the friendship year between India and China, this project with its ambitious plan and execution of construction, earned high attention from both Governments and became the good example for economic and trade co-operation between the two countries.
This question may be too early to ask, but what kind of capacity utilisation are you aiming for?
The annual capacity of the current manufacturing unit will be around 20 million kV and it will be gradually increased as per the demand from the Indian power sector. At present, we are manufacturing 765 kV high voltage transformers and reactors, but we want to manufacture 1,000 kV transformers that can singlehandedly distribute 6,000 MW of power at a time.
In recent years, TBEA has devoted itself to sharing its experience regarding the world leading energy-efficient power T&D innovative projects, including China´s 1,000kV UHV AC, ±800kV UHV DC, million kW level large nuclear, hydro, thermal power and renewable energy field. We have provided turnkey project service and system solutions with the combination of survey, design, erection, commissioning, training, operation and maintenance.
Since you have the intention to invest Rs 500 crore in renewable energy, have you fixed any deadline?
Relying upon this base and through closer cooperation with local partners, TBEA will help Indian customers achieve green development with energy-efficiency, promote the investment and development regarding renewable energy and integration of power electronics technology in India. As per the requirements of Indian economic and social development, we will gradually bring in wind-solar complementary power station integration technology, solar energy core components manufacturing technology, wire and cable manufacturing technology, power electronics integration technology, as the final phase investment of this project. Our final purpose is to build our TBEA Energy (India) Pvt. Ltd. into a world-class hi-tech industry base, to serve the economic development of India, South Asia and the world.
Since your India foray, how many projects has the company participated in?
In recent years, TBEA actively participated in major projects from Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) and other customers with our high quality products such as transformers, reactors, HV bushings, instrument transformers, GIS and wire & cables. Especially during the last two years, TBEA has been awarded over 200 products for 18 substations for PGCIL, NTPC and other State utilities. In addition, TBEA has undertaken six substation engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts and the construction of over 100 km of cables.
How about your corporate social responsibility initiatives in the region?
We always stick to the idea of blending in local social and economic development and contributing to the wellbeing of local people. Water is the source of life. A few days ago, TBEA held the inauguration ceremony for its first local CSR project, viz., water supply project for Miyagam village. This project can provide them with clean drinking water to improve their living standards. In the future, TBEA will be devoting itself to subsidising education activity to aid children from poor families.
With the first phase in place, and with the likelihood of starting the second one soon, what will be the total human resource procurement you will be doing?
For the first phase we have recruited 500 employees of which 92.6 per cent are locally hired and we have plans to add another 500 once the second phase is ready. Over 50 per cent employees have gone to the TBEA manufacturing base in China, and learned and acquired world-leading 765kV high-end power transmission manufacturing technologies which laid a good foundation for local manufacturing for Indian 765kV Power Grid construction.
