Sources from the district administration of Jagtsinghpur in Odisha informed that only 70 acre of land is left to be acquired for the proposed 8 mn tpa greenfield steel project of the South Korean firm Posco.
The administration acquired 2,630 acre of land against the initial requirement of 2,700 acre of land for the Rs 52,000 crore project, Surjit Das, additional district magistrate (ADM) posted at Paradip said.
Of this, the administration handed over 2,100 land to the company, he said. The administration is confident of completing land acquisition work with cooperation of the people.
In order to acquire land at Gobindpur village, the district administration demolished at least eight betel vines and fell above 800 horticulture plants. Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) assisted the district administration in this exercise.
However, protesters against the project argued that the land acquisition carried out by the government was illegal as it was being done defying decision of the Gram Sabha and lack of a MoU with the state government.
They also said that the villagers would not allow the steel major to venture into the area even as the government acquired land for them allegedly at gun point.
Also, both the project opponents and supporters protested delay in identifying them as "project affected".
