As its power grid has touched full capacity Punjab has stopped buying power from exchanges in the past few days even though Khraiff sowing season going on. State utilities in the state are resorting to power cuts. The situation is expected to continue for some time, officials say. Since the state is not in a position to draw anymore power due to grid constraints, there is no price discovery for power in Punjab.
With sowing season for Khariff in full swing, demand for power increased many notches as farmers run pumps to water their fields in Punjab. The state utilities have already entered into bilateral agreements with neighboring states including Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan for meeting its anticipated rise in demand.
However, despite arranging for additional power, the state is faced with demand outstripping supply," said a senior power department official from Rajasthan power department. Demand for power in Punjab has been hovering around 8,700 mw during peak period and the state is faced with a supply shortfall ranging between 15-20 per cent every day. Last year it crossed 9,000 mw during this time.
