After the recent SC directive scrapping allocations for 214 coal blocks, the country's annual coal imports might go up by 200 million tonnes (mt) over the next few years. India's coal output has lagged domestic demand for the past several years. It is set to fall even further behind next year as current operators wind down activity and hand the sites over to Coal India. These blocks were expected to produce about 52 mt in this fiscal year. Last fiscal, India's shipments rose to 168.4 million tonnes. Before the SC verdict, the government estimated that the domestic shortage may range between 185 and 265 mt. Annual imports of additional 60 mt will place more strain on the logistics chain.
