Solar and electric boat manufacturers NavAlt have launched India’s first solar-run ferry ‘Aditya’. With a passenger capacity of 75, the ferry can reach maximum speed of 7.5 knots. The service will run between 0700 hours to 1900 hours daily, with 10 minutes between rides during rush hours and 15 minutes during off-peak ones. Speaking on the occasion, Sandith Thandasherry, CEO, NavAlt Solar & Electric Boats said, “This ferry will be the first commercially viable mode of transport powered by solar energy in India. Over the next year, or so, we will be developing more solar ferries and will work with the government and MNRE to identify and secure new landing sites, providing a fast transit service to avoid traffic congestion.”
