Could energy efficiency help meet the demand for power?
Energy efficiency plays a vital role in meeting India´s growing demand for power. Each unit saved by a single household generates a unit for another household. Today, LEDs are considered to be the most efficient source of lighting. They can also theoretically last upto 50-60 kWh, but the industry is as of now assuring life of 20-30 kWh. According to ELCOMA, by replacing all CFL bulbs with LEDs, India could save an additional 30 BUs of electricity every year, out of a total of about 900BUs consumed every year. The government´s initiative to replace 90 lakh street lights and equip 10 crore households with LED bulbs by 2016 will enable energy savings of nearly 13 BUs annually.

What is the percentage savings generated for your clients?
Most of our clients use traditional fluorescent, metal halide or sodium lamps. The typical saving in such cases ranges between 50-60%. Capital investment is slightly higher on account LED being costlier. However due to huge amount of savings in running cost, the payback period becomes quite attractive for the client.
Dimmable LED lights are great for mood lighting. One can alter the mood by increasing or decreasing the intensity of the light. We have products with different color temeperatures, but they are static. Onme product will have 1 CCT only. Dynamically changing colors in 1 fixtures, such product is not there
According to you, are there any significant government policies that can help boost industry initiatives towards energy efficiency?
The Government by offering subsidies is trying to get people to convert to efficient sources of lighting i.e. LEDs. The Government sector is the single largest user for LED lights in India today. Apart from the large scale street lighting projects, increasing usage of LED lights for in-cabin lighting as well as the lighting of railway stations have contributed to the Government sector being the single largest adopter and growth trigger.
PM´s domestic efficient lighting programme is a very good initiative which will propel the early adoption of LED bulbs by the consumers. The Government is taking all the possible steps to ensure that it gets adopted, including subsidizing the costs to a great extent and offering low EMI schemes for even the balance cost. Government has also made it mandatory to have LED lights affixed with energy efficiency rating labels.
What is your estimate on the potential growth for energy efficiency applications in India, especially with respect to your product offerings?
The current value of LED lighting market in India is 4000 crore, we are expecting it to reach 21000 crore by year 2020. The industry is likely to grow at a CAGR of 50% in the next 5 years. There is a tremendous growth in adopting energy efficient solutions in India. With the government´s initiatives to get people to convert to efficient sources of lighting i.e. LEDs. We can make a total shift to LEDs even today. Most of the products that NTL Lemnis offer are retrofits - that means that the products can be fitted into existing fixtures conveniently. And this is why LEDs are becoming more and more popular day by day. Most applications have retrofits available immediately.
What according to you are the major challenges and obstacles faced while executing energy efficiency goals and policies in India? What should be the approach towards this?
Today, the major challenge that is faced by the country is during transmission and distribution of energy. We are already an energy deficient country and then the losses of over 23% during T & D takes its toll. Then the usage of energy in-efficient equipment for lighting, electrical and electronics, makes the situation even worse.
In our industry, the most efficient source of energy are LEDs and harnessing this source will go a long way in addressing the issue of optimal utilization of power. But again there are major issues - Cost being a big deterrent.
I am of the view that proper communication of the benefits will go a long way in creating awareness about LED lighting in India. Converting the influencers - the people who matter in the industry -û town planners, architects, designers and others - will go a long way in creating the changeover to most energy efficient lighting.
The Government´s announcement of drastically lowering the cost of LEDs is also possibly a signal that they are looking at mass scale adoption and is a welcome step in the right direction.
