State-run NHPC is a hydropower generator with regulated business model and installed capacity of 6 GW. The company has a project pipeline with 3.3 GW of projects under construction stage, 7.2 GW of projects under clearance and survey stage.
Despite the fact that hydroelectric projects are recognised as the most economic and preferred source of electricity, the share of hydropower in the total installed capacity in India has been declining steadily since 1963. The hydro share has declined from 44 per cent in 1970 to 18 per cent in 2013. In order to reverse the trend and given the renewed thrust on hydropower by the government, NHPC Ltd has drawn up a massive capacity addition plan in the hydro sector.
Projects under clearance
In terms of installed capacity, ABL Srivastava, Director (Finance), NHPC Ltd, suggests that at present the installed capacity as on date is 4,987 MW and in the last 12 months, the company has added a capacity of 805 MW. Meanwhile, NHPC´s Dhauliganga project, which was severely hit by the Uttarakhand flood, has been re-commissioned in record time of less than one year. Says Srivastava, ´Two units were completed within less than one year and two within less than 13 months. So, this is one of the rare achievements for any hydro sector unit, which had faced such a heavy devastation.´
