Towards the Grid of the Future
New technologies drive traditional utilities to redefine traditional approaches to operations. While micro-grids and other Distributed Energy Resources (DER) play a significant role in lighting up India's rural communities, supporting initiatives such as Saubhagya also play a valuable part in the development of India's smart grid of the future.

Intelligent grids backed by cyber security will be the norm
In analysing the grid failure of 2012, it was observed that overloading and consequent tripping of 220 kV system had pushed the system to the edge. As is the case with most system failures, no single factor was responsible for the grid disturbance.

Smart grids can be leveraged to meet needs of remote areas
Smart grids are targeted to make the power grids efficient, reliable and eco-friendly. All these three elements drive the benefits to the common population. Lower grid interruptions, notifications about outages and power restorations, reduced emissions are some of the benefits that could be directly felt by the common population.

The micro intervention
Globally, 1.2 billion people-including 550 million in Africa, lack energy access (International Energy Agency, 2012), and depend on kerosene for their lighting requirements. However, kerosene not only provides poor illumination, but is also highly toxic, hazardous, and environmentally unfriendly.
