Kochi could easily touch four million tonnes of annual bunker sales and emerge as a prominent bunker hub with its given infrastructure, according to industry experts at a meeting organised by the Cochin Port Trust. Six papers, covering varied topics ranging from international bunkering trends, bunkering scenario in India, initiatives taken by oil majors and the potential of the Cochin Port to emerge as the leading bunker destination, were presented.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) launched a 60 KW solar power station set up at its headquarters, thus becoming one of the leading campaigners of green energy in the state. With this, the second and third floors of GCDA headquarters at Kadavanthra will be completely lit utilising solar power, a move which would reduce its energy bills to almost half.

Marine Drive walkway in Kochi to get wind powered lights

In Kochi, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has decided to harness wind power to light up its Marine Drive! The development authority is planning to tap wind energy for power lighting systems at the Marine Drive walkway. In the first phase, the authority plans to generate about five kilowatt electricity which can power 100 lights installed at the walkway on a trial basis. GCDA chairman N Venugopal said that the authority has done an initial study and conducted tests.

Cochin airport 1st to use solar power for grid

By way of using solar power for running its utility grid system, Cochin International Airport is set to become the first airport of its kind in India. The Kolkata-based solar module manufacturing company, Vikram Solar, would be installing a 100 KW solar power facility at the airport situated at Nedumbassery in Cochin. Gyanesh Chaudhary, director of the company said that Vikram Solar would design, install and commission the solar photo-voltaic (PV) power system consisting of mounted solar panels.
