Kerala State Electricity Board buys costly power

For the first time this year, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been forced to evacuate power from costly thermal and naphtha stations in the state. The utility was forced to purchase power from Brahmapuram and Kozhikode diesel power plants on March 9, the day that witnessed the highest power consumption of the year (77.5 million units).

With an expenditure of Rs 3,200 crore Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will set up a 400 mw LNG-based power plant at Brahmapuram. The Board Chairman M Sivasankar said that KSEB would fund the project on its own.He added that the Board had to shell out Rs 7,800 crore to purchase power last year. On an average, it spends Rs 700 crore per month to purchase power. He said the generatio plant will significantly ease the power shortage in the state.

Kerala's electricity board, KSEB has now decided to focus its energies on thermal power. The Board has decided to set up a Project Implementation Team for the accelerated implementation of a slew of proposed thermal projects in the pipeline. Power projects that will come under the purview of this team will include the LNG-based projects in Put­huvypeen, Brahmapuram and Cheemeni and a pet coke collaboration project with the BPCL-KRL.
