To meet its growing energy needs Bihar Government has identified various water abundant places in the state for building small hydroelectric power stations. The State has only 55 mw of installed capacity of all hydroelectric power units presently.
Bihar State Hydroelectric Power Corporation (BHPC) Managing Director AK Pandey told a newspaper on November 14 that other ambitious future hydroelectric power projects include Indrapuri power station with an installed capacity of 450 mw.
Small hydroelectric power units will be set up at Kataiya, Daulatpur, Thumha, Singheshwar Bazar, Kariapatti, Jadia, Parsa (all in Supaul district), Manhara and Malhanwa (Saharsa district) and Satokhar (Madhepura).
The total installed capacity of future hydroelectric power stations in Bihar will be 650 mw, a major push for a sector which has not so far reached its full potential in the State.
The installed capacity of the present hydroelectric power plants range from highest 20 MW at Kataiya hydroelectric power plant to Shrikhinda power station in Rohtas district which generates only 0.7 mw.
The Government has also identified five places for setting up pumped-storage hydroelectric power stations in Kaimur district with the total installed capacity of 2,970 mw. The pumped-storage power projects may be set up at Hathiadah-Durgawati, Telharkund, Sinafadar, Panchgotia and Kohira.
Pumped storage is the most efficient and flexible form of storing electricity on a large scale, enabling utilities to respond quickly to demand and replacing the fossil fuels traditionally used during peak demand periods with renewable, carbon dioxide free energy.
