The ministry of coal plans to auction about 25 coal blocks in Jharkhand, Gujarat and Maharashtra. These coal blocks were de-allocated from private sector companies owing to delays in developing them. Earlier, the de-allocated coal blocks were given for development to Coal India Ltd but the recently amended Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act calls for allocation of coal blocks through auction. The coal ministry has cancelled licences of 80 out of 218 allotted captive coal blocks. Most private sector parties have challenged the de-allocations.
