Villagers stopped the mining project at NTPC's Pakri-Barwadih coal block demanding higher compensation from the state-run coal producer for acquiring the cultivable land.
NTPC, which wants to mine the block to run its ultra mega power project, refused to raise compensation amount from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 40 lakh as demanded by villagers.
The protest from villagers of Barkagaon and Keredari blocks may hit NTPC's plan to start its the project by the end of this year.
Thiess India — the Australian Company tasked with NTPC's coal exploration at Pakri-Barwadih — was not allowed to begin work on the project by villagers.
Some other contractors engaged by NTPC for the project were reportedly assaulted. The villagers did not allow Tekro, another company who was supposed to set up the conveyor belt at Katkumdag village, to enter the village.
Some NTPC sources said the compensation offered to the villagers was based on its consultation with the Jharkhand government and it is not only the best among offers by PSUs in the state but one of the best in the country. NTPC has also reportedly invested Rs 10 crore in community development work in the area.
