Sembcorp Industries is a leading energy, water, marine and urban development group operating across five continents worldwide. In India, Sembcorp is one of the largest foreign investors in India's power sector today, with more than 3,800 megawatts of thermal and renewable assets in operation and under development in the country. Sembcorp along with Gayatri Projects operates the 2,640 MW Sembcorp Gayatri Power Complex which houses two identical supercritical thermal power plants - Thermal Powertech Corporation India and Sembcorp Gayatri Power in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Sembcorp also has close to 1,200 MW of renewable power assets in operation and under development located in India's renewable resource-rich regions.
Sembcorp entered the Indian energy market in 2010. The company developes, operates and manages the US$3 billion Sembcorp Gayatri Power Complex (SGPC) in Andhra Pradesh that houses the two identical supercritical thermal power plants: TPCIL and SGPL in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
SGPC is committed to providing efficient and safe energy by bringing down the emissions from its thermal power plant. Offering a total power capacity of 2,640 MW, which is equivalent to about 40 per cent of the daily energy demand of Andhra Pradesh the power complex supports the growing energy needs of the region.
TPCIL clocked plant availability of ~100 per cent in February and March 2017 and the plant also achieved its best yet PLF (plant load factor) of 95.8 per cent in March 2017. During the fiscal, TPCIL successfully generated more than 9059 million units of power and served 8.42 million people (at an average per capita of 1,075 kWh per annum).
With 85 per cent power tied up in long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), TPCIL successfully availed itself of the mega policy benefits, saving us more than Rs.78,405 lakh in customs duty.
SGPL Unit-I and Unit-II achieved Commercial Operation Date (COD) on November 17, 2016 and February 21, 2017 respectively; during this short span of time, the plant successfully generated 1,659 million units of power and served ~1.54 million people (at an average per capita of 1,075 kWh per annum).
Key success factors
Sembcorp is committed to running a safe and sustainable operation. As part of this commitment towards running an environmentally sustainable operations the company has built a green cover around its operation. In a bid to transform the power complex into one of the greenest power plants, more than 3.5 lakh saplings have already been planted and are being nurtured.
The proximity of the two super-critical power plants allows Sembcorp to benefit from substantial synergies and logistics infrastructure and management. By leveraging technology and innovation from start to end, SGPC has been able to achieve efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional coal-fired power plants.
Awards & achievements
Within one year of COD, TPCIL plant, received ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. This not only demonstrates the strong emphasis SGPC places on its creative excellence, but it will also raise the bar for its commitment towards continuous service standards and achievements.
