Power surplus Gujarat is losing Rs 2,200 crore per annum as gas and coal-based power plants are lying idle.
Gujarat minister for energy and petrochemicals Saurabh Patel said this in Vadodara on the sidelines of the round table on power sector organised by Baroda Management Association (BMA) on July 26. Speaking at the round table held on the theme of 'Managing surplus-accessing cheaper' (leveraging Gujarat power sector for business growth), Patel alleged that wrong policies of UPA government has left gas-based power plants idle across the country.
Across the country, there is about 21,000 mw of gas-based power generation capacity, out of which 5,000 mw is in Gujarat. All of them have been idle due to non-availability of cheap gas from Centre. If we calculate investment, nationally around Rs 50,000 crore of investment is lying idle. In Gujarat, around Rs 15,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore worth investment is not being utilized because of the wrong policies, he said.
Patel said that since the gas-based power plants are lying idle in Gujarat, it is causing loss to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore annually in the form of fixed cost. We have represented to the government several times, but unfortunately no decision has been taken on this, he said.
