Hoshang Subrawala spoke about industry-leading technologies and services including membrane filtration, zero liquid discharge etc and how various industries have deployed and benefitted from these water solutions. Excerpts of the interview:What is the potential of wastewater treatment for power plants in India?The potential areas of waste water recycle in power plants is cooling tower blow down, boiler blow down and DM regeneration waste water. In coal-based power plants, normally they use these effluents for ash-water mixing and it is taken to the ash ponds. The potential in both coal and gas-based plants lie in these power plants recycling the waste-water.The industry-leading technologies and services include membrane filtration and zero liquid discharge. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods?Membrane technologies can handle waste water up to a TDS of <50,000 ppm and the rejects from membrane technologies have to be evaporated through zero liquid discharge equipment like evaporator or crystalliser. These are different technologies and not used for the same purposes in waste-water. For zero liquid discharge system normally the method is pre-treatment ultra filtration, RO (multiple stages), evaporator or crystalliser (ZLD). Our EDR technology can replace RO but the same depends on feed water characteristics and treated water quality requirements.Also, what technology used abroad would you suggest should be emulated in India?The methods mentioned above are technologies that are also used internationally. Zero liquid discharge is designed for long-term operation and well-suited for adoption in India.Since wastewater treatment generates a large amount of sludge, what would you suggest to handle sludge, which needs to be sent to the offsite for disposal? Sludge generated is generally sent for land filling or secured land filling.
