Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on February 12 launched the Kerala government’s Solar Homes project implemented by the State Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT). The Union Minister emphasised the need for tapping solar power.
Abdullah said that whole India is deficient in power. If India is to shine, it has to create so much power for its own use and, maybe, for its neighbours also, he added. Farooq Abdullah said that 65 years after Independence, 40 per cent of the population was still without energy. The whole world was looking at India and how it would exploit solar power.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy described solar power as the 'practical solution' to the acute power shortage faced by the state. The Solar Homes project envisages the installation of 1 kw rooftops solar power units in 10,000 homes in the state.
