The government is likely to allow private firms to build and operate critical railway lines connecting Coal India mines to power, steel and cement projects.
The proposal, agreed ´in-principle´ by the railway and coal ministries, will allow private companies to charge fee from the users of the rail links, similar to the toll charged by highway developers, an official said. ¨The proposal will help easy and early completion of these railway lines that are critical to raising Coal India´s production to the targeted 1 billion tonne by 2020. We will identify profitable lines, which can attract private firms. This is just one option we are exploring to set up the lines expeditiously,¨ the official said on condition of anonymity, say news reports.
