Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has called upon people to make extensive use of renewable sources of energy to reduce the country’s dependence on conventional sources. Speaking at the commissioning of the 40 kwp (kilowatts-peak) solar power project at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai recently, Abdullah said that making use of solar power and wind power will help reduce the country’s dependence on conventional sources of fuel such as coal, petroleum and gas.

Renewables share 12.5% in India's total power generation

In India, the present installed capacity of power generation is about 2,12,829 mw which includes 26,920 mw from renewable sources. This constitutes 12.5 per cent contribution of renewables in the total power generation installed capacity in the country. The Ministry has projected a capacity addition of about 29,800 mw from renewable energy sources during 12th Plan period.
