Energy is essential for everyday functioning. Currently, majority of our energy needs are met by conventional sources of energy. But, if we need to sustain the world we live in, developing and investing in renewable sources would be the way to go. Taking a cue, the Government of India (GoI) unveiled new renewable targets for 2022 (100 GW solar, 60 GW wind and 15 GW from biomass, geothermal, hydel etc.).
Finally, with the government of India kick-starting the coal auction process, well on time (thanks to the Supreme Court timeline verdict), the Centre has silenced all the critics and has opened a new chapter altogether in the ´black gold´ sector.
According to a report released by Pike Research in 2013, a total of 454 geothermal projects are currently underway across the globe. A total of 64 countries have active geothermal projects (with surface exploration already underway), a significant improvement over the 30-odd countries
Seven coal blocks identified for underground coal gasification
The Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) Technology has not been established in India. To expedite the UCG development in India, Ministry of Coal (MoC) has issued Gazette Notification wherein the production of syngas obtained through coal gasification (Underground and Surface) and coal liquefaction to be end uses for the purposes of Coal Mines Nationalization Act.
