Before it could finalise commercial contracts for exporting dry fuel, Coal India (CIL) wants a policy on coal exports. CIL is facing a high demand in the domestic market and it is their initial aim to meet those demands, not aggressively though. In order to create a market for long-term, CIL is in talks for exports to Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Small quantity of coal is exported to the neighbouring countries through bilateral agreements, informed CIL’s senior officer. Earlier, the government was planning to export coal with high ash content or of higher grades. In May 2017, CIL was scouting for an export opportunity at a time when pithead coal stock was high as close to 70 million tonne. Due to a sudden rise in demand from the power sector, the pithead stock reduced to 23 million tonne.
