At the Wind Power India 2011 conference in Chennai, Hans Jorgen Koch, Deputy State Secretary, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy, Denmark said that fossil fuels globally were three times more expensive than wind power.Wind power will contribute substantially to the global energy security and in the fight against climate change and global warming. The world wind power capacity has touched 2 lakh MW and it will be 4 lakh MW by 2050. Similarly, Indian wind power capacity will be 50,000 MW from the current 13, 000 MW.In view of these developments, a three-day 'Wind Power India 2011' seminar and exhibition was organised by World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE), Pune in association with Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers' Association (IWTMA) in Chennai.Commenting on the magnitude of the sector, Dr Klaus Rave, member (advisory panel) Wind Power India 2011 and Chairman, GWEC, while delivering the keynote address said, "One of the fastest-growing industry segments in the world, the renewable energy sector had an investment of $243 billion between 2004 and 2010 and of this, $96 billion was in wind power alone. Wind power will help meet global energy needs, ensure energy security and reduce the risk of climate change and global warming. The wind industry withstood the 2009 economic crisis and was on the growth track in 2010. The growth has been mainly in Asia, especially in China and India. Cooperation is key to the success of the industry globally and if we do not interlink various forces, we will not have a global perspective for wind energy. In India, there has been an average growth of 27 per cent. There should be a national legal framework and centralised regulatory system for the industry in India."Hans Jorgen Koch, Deputy State Secretary, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy, Denmark, said, "The world is facing an energy crisis because of constraints on fossil fuel supplies due to natural calamities and their impact on climate change." While commenting on the fact that in the global energy outlook fossil fuels globally were three times more expensive than wind power he said, "The extra cost for renewables will not be equal to the extra cost of fossil fuels."Tulsi Tanti, CMD, Suzlon, said, "Continuous economic growth and energy necessitated an increase in production of electricity from renewable sources, especially wind power. India has only 1.6 lakh MW of power capacity for a population of 1.2 billion as compared to China's 9.6 lakh MW for the same population. In India, 400 million people still do not have an electricity connection. To supply electricity to all at an affordable cost and to support the 8-9 per cent growth in GDP, there should be much more power generation, especially from renewable sources. The wind power industry is also a catalyst of rural growth and creator of large employment. However, many states in India do not have the required grid infrastructure. For better growth of the industry, there should be local community support. We also have to monitor the impact of the direct tax code on the wind power industry."Dr R Christodas Gandhi, CMD, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) describing Tamil Nadu as the 'better half of wind India' said that the state has 40 per cent of the installed capacity and 50 per cent wind power generation in the country.DV Giri, Chairman, IWTMA, and Vice-Chairperson of GWEC said that in 2010-11, the installed capacity of wind power in India touched 2,300 MW. Of this, 997 MW is from Tamil Nadu. He said, "There has been a paradigm shift in the market and from a retail segment, it has matured to large-scale wind farm projects of several mega watts. Similarly the myth of subsidies for wind power has also been blown off with no special subsidies for the wind power sector."Indicating the positive environment for the wind energy sector, G M Pillai, Founder Director, WISE, said, "About 150 exhibitors from 12 countries showcased the latest in wind technology and other developments."
