Mining industry warms up to renewables
Renewable energy supplies just 0.1 per cent of the total energy requirements of the mining industry. However, this figure might touch a likely 8 per cent by 2022, according to latest estimates. Wind power will be the major contributor (516 MW of projected installed capacity) with solar coming in a close second. A growth in remote operations coupled with rising energy prices is propelling this development. There has also been a broad consensus among various mining operators on the need to reduce the industry´s carbon footprint.
