Ministry takes efforts to expedite nod for 12 mining projects

The union coal ministry is taking efforts to expedite green clearance for 12 mining projects involving a total investment of Rs 1,347 crore.

The ministry is learnt to have introduced a Cabinet note seeking approval of the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) to expedite environment clearances for these projects.

These 12 projects listed by the coal ministry cost less than Rs 1,000 crore individually but expediting the pending EC and FC approvals would help realising an additional production of seven million tonne in 2013-14.

It may be noted that the ministry along with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) jointly identified these projects, which were stuck for want of green clearances and where approvals can be given quickly.

According to official sources, eight of the projects are awaiting Environment Clearance (EC), three projects need stage I Forest Clearance (FC) and a project to be granted stage II FC. Overall, clearances for 40 projects are pending with the MoEF.

The ministry has also sought a review by the CCI of progress in three critical rail link projects where execution has been delayed owing to green clearances and land acquisition issues.
