Uday Purohit, Managing Director, Neptunus
How do you assess the market scenario for the power industry?
A good sign for the country is that we are headed towards being a power surplus nation. With the government actively pursuing its stated goal of 'electrifying all of India', power should be available to any industry anywhere. That means that the captive power market is in its sunset phase. Once grid power is reliable and abundant, the demand for standby gensets will also drastically reduce.
One reason India is largely self-sufficient in power today is because industrial demand has not grown as anticipated. Once this demand picks up we may witness a period of power deficit. One thing is certain. We are at the end of the era of fossil fuel dependency. At Neptunus we believe disruptive technology will eventually overtake the traditional methods of power generation.
What kinds of opportunities do you foresee?
Service is our platform for reaching out to customers. Although we represent two large engine manufacturers in India, we have always looked at ourselves to be a service provider. We are present in the industrial, marine and off-shore sectors. We integrate our services with the business needs of our customer. As long as we continue to do what we are focussed on - delivering value to our customers - we see opportunities everywhere, in India and overseas.
Which products do you plan to display at PowerGen 2017?
We are showcasing our 'ExtenSave' solution in reliability engineering. While several companies today appreciate the value of 'Reliability Engineering' to preserve their assets, ExtenSave takes it one step ahead. We believe that (and research has proved it) the focus should start from lubricating oil. If we were able to keep our oil in good condition, most of our issues with maintenance of machinery would be resolved. ExtenSave = Proactive Oil Main-tenance + Reliability Engineering.
We are moving on from micro filtration to nano filtration. This year we showcase our Oil Management Services and the world¦s finest filtration system - Europafilter. About 99 per cent of the contaminant particles in lube oil are under 5 microns, 70 per cent of the particles are below 1 micron. No filtration system address these particles. And it is these particles that cause havoc in the lubricating and hydraulic oil by oxidation. Oxidation of oil produces acids, sludge and varnish. The fundamental properties of oil are altered and this is where wear and tear is accelerated.
Europafilter eliminates oxidation to 99 per cent. We remove all varnish from the oil. The benefits are manifold - increased intervals of oil drain and oil filter change (by a factor of 5 at least), increase in MTBO and greater reliability in operations.
It is our experience that at the plant level, oil sampling may not happen properly and consistently. Oil laboratories may not always give you an analysis which is in line with what a manufacturer recommends (it is a one size fits all policy) and the reports which are received are not viewed and analysed properly. How can equipment operate reliably? Our oil management program is an end-to-end solution - to take consistent samples, have it tested at a laboratory, analyse the trends in house and present solutions to the end user.
Take us through your overall operations and products?
The company operates in 7 verticals. Our engineering services division provides complete maintenance and turnkey project engineering solutions; our ExtenSave is our reliability engineering program and together with EuropaFilter is our proactive maintenance solution.
We represent two large engine manufacturers in India - ElectroMotive Diesel (a Caterpillar company) and Niigata Power Systems, Japan (a IHI Company). Our engine solutions are for power generation in the marine, off-shore and industrial sectors. We offer end-to-end services for a variety of diesel engines as an independent of manufacturer service provider such as Caterpillar, Perkins, Cummins, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Wartsila, MAN etc. Our recycling team is India's largest exporter of recycled copper alloys to some of the world's largest producers of propellers and continuous casting products.
Which are the projects that your products have been successfully installed?
Neptunus has been in business for over 20 years. We have a long list of loyal customers in over 13 countries. Our customers are in the marine, off-shore and industrial sectors. One of our biggest successes recently has been at Songas in Tanzania. Songas produces 250 MW or 25 per cent of Tanzania's overall power requirements at its gas turbine powered plant in Dar-E-Salam. Naturally, like every operator of gas turbines, build up of varnish is a great concern to them. They tried several filtration solutions and finally our EuropaFilter was able to meet their stringent demands. The entire plant now has EuropaFilters fitted on all their gas turbines.
How is the growth of the company been? What are your future plans?
Despite the tough conditions, Neptunus has shown robust growth over the last two years. We were selected amongst the 100 best SMEs last year by the India SME Forum. This year we have targeted a 30 per cent increase in our top line. One of our big goals is to work our way into becoming one of India¦s Best Places to Work. We strongly believe that our organisational culture will distinguish us from others in the future.
