Kudankulam nuclear power project to start in June
The Kudankulam nuclear power project will be commissioned in June 2011, ensuring that the Rs 13,000-crore project hits the grid in September this fiscal. Russian equipment supplier, Atomstroyexport, which has been assigned the task of setting up the reactor, is reportedly on track. If everything is executed on time Tamil Nadu, which faces an acute power shortage and is the host state for the project, will get 462.5 MW of the first unit.
The project was originally scheduled to have started in December 2007 but due to several political and economical disturbances both, in India and Russia, the project could not be completed on time. United States had also opposed the plant on the ground of the 1992 terms of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
