Lighthouses in Tamil Nadu, Pondy to go green by December

The 23 lighthouses across
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will be fitted with solar panels by December, in line with a country-wide programme designed for the purpose by the Union Ministry of Shipping´s Directorate General of Lighthouse and Lightships (DGLL). As many as 176 out of the total 193 lighthouses in India have already been solarised with panels of 20-25 kW having been installed, and once done are expected to generate 1.5 MW of uninterrupted power, contributing towards reducing 6,000 kg of greenhouse gases per day. The programme will save the Ministry several lakhs of rupees in electricity bills each month.
