EPC projects becoming more complex

Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) industry players are exploring options for minimising the risks occurring due to project delays. With an improving economy, better results are expected ahead, avers Ravi Todi, Managing Director, Shrachi ' Bengal Tools Ltd.

How would you assess the current Indian EPC project market?
Current Indian EPC market is in fluctuation throwing challenge to bidders to bid on EPC lump sum basis as bidding itself requires financial investment. EPC projects becoming more complex and projects deadlines becoming short, synchronization among the contractor, consultant & vendor is very crucial to deliver the project on time.

What is the scope that you see in EPC solutions in the years to come?
EPC industry is already a multi-dollar industry with contractors finding innovative ways to minimize risks. Although recession has delayed the project progress, it provided the opportunity to build project with best manpower available. However, projects will deliver the result with economy pacing up.

Do foreign EPC contractors enjoy a level playing field vis-a-vis their Indian counterparts?Foreign EPC contractors have certain advantages like low "financing costs" in their countries and a large component of foreign exchange in their price for which exchange-variation is to the account of client getting full L/Cs from clients. The flipside, however, is that they at times disremember providing appropriate Indian taxes and duties in their prices due to a lack of clarity.

Any major development that the company would like to share with us. BTL-E has joined hands with many foreign companies for technology partnerships like. Eastern Scientific & research institute of coal (Vyukhin, Russia), Far Eastern power engineering plant OJSC ,Dalenergomash (Russia), Dearborn mid west conveyor company ( USA), Beijing Shougang Company and Biuro Projektow Koksoprojekt (Poland).
