NTPC awards orders for Kudgi superthermal power plant
The company has placed equipment orders worth over Rs 6,000 crore for three units of its upcoming 4,000 MW Kudgi superthermal power plant in Karnataka. The steam generator order worth Rs 3,804.70 crore has been placed with Doosan Chennai Works while the steam turbine generator order to the tune of Rs 2,282.90 crore has been given to Toshiba JSW turbine and generator. The equipment is for stage I with three units of 800 MW each of the power project, which is coming up at an estimated cost of over Rs 15,166 crore.
The company has also opted to buy coal through the e-auction at rates lower than market prices in view of the coal shortage. It imported about 6 million tonnes (MT) of coal (nearly 10 MT of domestic) in 2009-10 and has now decided to fix a ceiling of 10 per cent for imported coal.
In a related development, the coal ministry returned five coal mines to the company. The utility plans to raise its generation capacity from 36,000 MW to 66,000 MW by 2017.
