India to set up 12 biofuel refineries worth USD 1.5 billion
In order to reduce the country's dependence on oil imports, the Indian Government will be setting up 12 biofuel refineries worth $ 1.5 billion. The consumption shift towards biofuels may reduce oil imports by $ 1.74 billion while producing 4,500 million litres of ethanol for the coming four years. 10 per cent ethanol blending in petrol is expected by 2022, while the plan is to increase this further to 20 per cent by 2030. Though supplies continue to be a key concern, as of now, India has allowed blending of up to 10 per cent ethanol which is sourced from sugarcane in gasoline.
