NGO plans to install solar streetlights

In Karnataka's Shimoga city, a non-governmental organisation ‘Nanna Kanasina Shivamogga’ wants to install solar streetlights with the help of banks, institutions, corporates and public. The city is reeling under unscheduled power cuts and people are spending sleepless nights. Nanna Kanasina Shivamogga president Gopinath said that the demand for power is increasing considerably in the state.

In view of this, the organisation has planned to install solar streetlights in each ward of the city, he added. The organisation is planning to install 10 solar streetlights in each of the 35 wards under city municipal council for which financial assistance has been sought from the banks, cooperative societies, corporates, industries, businessmen, and even general public.

Each solar light costs around Rs 20,000 with the pole. In all, it is planned to install more than 350 solar streetlights, he added. He said that if the project received good response they would also ask the elected representatives to give some funds for this purpose.

He sought the cooperation of the CMC, BSNL and MESCOM and also urged the cooperative societies not to announce the dividends of this year to their share-holders. Instead, it should be used for solar lights. This is an experiment. If they received good response from the donors and public, it would become a good project.
