Centre plans to add 5.3 GW of nuclear capacity in 12th Plan

According to a government report, the Centre envisages a capacity addition of 5,300 MW in nuclear power during the 12th Five Year Plan, which includes two 1,000 MW units at Kudankulam which are being built by Nuclear Power Corporation with Russian collaboration.

If the target of 5,300 MW is achieved, the total contribution of atomic power would be 9,980 MW to the country’s energy mix by the end of the 12th Plan period.

Besides the two units of the Kudankulam project, one 500 MW prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, two 700 MW indigenously-developed pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) each at Kakrapar and Rawat Bhata respectively will also be commissioned.
