Bihar to go for smart grids to curb T&D losses
Bihar government is now planning to introduce smart grids to curb rising transmission and distribution (T&D) losses. In this attempt, the government has found a partner in State-run transmission utility Power Grid Corporation, which recently submitted a proposal for pilot project.
Smart grids can trim T&D losses, ensure better availability of power and quality of supply, besides controlling thefts in this power deprived state.
The State Energy Minister Vijayendra Yadav said that providing quality electricity is the State government’s priority. He said that the government was striving to increase the generation and taking open market route too.
More than 4,000 mw will be available for the state by 2015-16. However, increasing T&D losses are a matter of concern, the Minister said. Bihar has one of the largest T&D losses in the country with almost 43 per cent of the installed capacity being lost in transmission.
