Solar power installations: China takes the lead
In 2013, China added 12 GW of solar power, the largest solar power capacity added by any country in one year. In total, the country added 100 GW of power last year. Though coal still accounted for a major share of power output, China has taken to renewable sources in a big way to curb pollution and meet its burgeoning energy demands. In fact, there is a total ban on coal-generated power in a few areas of the nation where air pollution has been reaching unmanageable proportions. Reports indicate that Beijing is looking at generating 14 GW of solar energy this calendar year. Chinese policymakers are however shifting their focus to solar rooftop installations rather than mega solar power projects.
