NTPC to invest Rs 6,600 crore in coal-based power project
NTPC will invest around Rs 6,600 crore to set up a coal-based power project at Kanpur, on which work is expected to start from January 2012. The proposed 1,320 MW project is likely to come up at Bilhaur, near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The company's installed capacity is over 34,000 MW and it plans to further ramp it up to 75,000 MW by 2017 from all sources of energy. NTPC recently commissioned its first super-critical power project at Sipat in Chhattisgarh.
Meanwhile, Sushilkumar Shinde, Power Minister, said that a decision on re-allocation of coal blocks to NTPC will soon be taken. Citing the company's failure to develop the fields, the Coal Ministry had in May cancelled five coal blocks allocated to it. Earlier this month, the power ministry had requested the coal ministry to review the decision, saying the company's plans to add 15,000 MW generation capacity may be hit due to the cancellations.
