Guidelines for handling agencies

The Gujarat High Court has asked coal-handling agencies to follow Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) guidelines to prevent health hazards for the residents staying nearby. The order came in response to a 2011 public interest petition which said handling of imported coal at Magdalla port near Surat city was causing pollution. The coal would be dumped in big heaps in the open without any safeguards resulting in coal dust flying with the wind and settling in nearby areas, the petition said.
