India's FY18 thermal coal imports up 8%
The recent government data showed that India’s thermal coal and coking coal imports rose by 8 per cent and 13 per cent respectively, for the first time in three financial years. The increase in imports will be a boon for international miners like Indonesia's Adaro Energy, Australia's Whitehaven Coal and global commodity merchants such as Glencore. The statistics wing of India’s trade ministry mentioned the value of India’s coal imports rising by 38.2 per cent to Rs 1,384.77 billion. Imports of thermal coal - mostly used for power generation - rose to 161.27 million tonne for the year, from 149.31 million tonne the previous financial year.
