Coal import may rise to 185 million tonne by 2016-17
During his budget speech, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that the import of coal into India may rise to 185 million tonne by 2016-17 driven primarily by the needs of the power sector.
He said Coal India (CIL) will have to import coal and blend it in order to meet the needs of the current power projects and those that will come up by 2015-16.
It may be noted that the government recently gave in-principle approval for coal price pooling that would ensure higher fuel supplies to stranded power project but also lead to an increase in power generation in the country.
Chidambaram stressed on the need to reduce dependence on coal to generate power in due course of time.
