Transmission Company with Highest Growth in Network Creation in State Sector - TANTRANSCO

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was restructured by establishing a holding company with the name TNEB Ltd and two subsidiary companies namely Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) as per the mandatory requirements of the Electricity Act 2003.

Performance Highlights
Transmission sector of TANTRANSCO consists of the following network infrastructure:

EHT for a total length of 24,497 km.

A total of 842 substations

95 substations in and around Chennai have been provided with SCADA and have been integrated into Chennai Distribution and Control Centre (DCC)

TANTRANSCO has one State Load Dispatch Centre at Chennai and 3 Sub LDCs at Chennai, Madurai and Erode.

The transmission network expansion is aimed at evolving a national power grid to facilitate free flow of power across regional boundaries, raising the transmission voltage from 230 kV to 400 kV level. In order to evacuate bulk power from one region to another, there is scope for enhancing the transmission capability to 765 kV level. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has taken up the indigenous erection of 400 kV substations and lines. Establishment of 765 kV transmission lines is also under investigation.

Key achievements
State Load Despatch Centre: Grid operation in Tamil Nadu started in November 1964. The first Load Despatch Centre was operated from Erode. Subsequently, the main Load Dispatch Centre was formed in 1986 at Chennai and a Sub Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) at Madurai. This SLDC ensures integrated operation of the power system. It is responsible for optimum scheduling and dispatch of electricity within the state in accordance with the contracts entered into with the licensees or the generation companies operating in that state. It monitors grid operation, exercises supervision and control over the inter-state transmission system and is responsible for carrying out real-time operation for grid control and dispatch of electricity within the state through secure and economic operation of the state grid in accordance with the grid standards and state grid code.
