Power Packed Partnership-L&T-MHI

Looking at the burgeoning power demand of the country, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), engineering and construction conglomerate, joined hands with Japanese power giant, Mitsubishi and formed a joint venture company - L&T-MHI Turbine Generators Private Limited (LMTG) in 2007. L&T holds 51 per cent stake, while Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI), holds 39 per cent stake and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) has 10 per cent stake in LMTG. The JV company is in the business of design, manufacture, supply, project management, operational spares & life cycle services of supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam turbines & generators with ratings ranging from 500 MW to 1,000 MW and steam turbines of 150 MW and 300 MW for combined cycle power plants.

The Company has established a state-of the- art facility to manufacture 4,000 MW of turbines and generators per year, located on the banks of Tapi River, 300 kms north of Mumbai and 21 kms off Surat, in Hazira, India's largest industrial hub. The turbine & generator facility is located at L&T Hazira manufacturing complex, one of the world's largest and most advanced hubs for manufacturing of the complete range of equipment for supercritical power plants of L&T Power.

LMTG is the only fully integrated factory, where large size turbine and generators are manufactured, assembled and tested under single roof. The facility includes Fabrication, Rotor manufacturing, Assembly facility, 1000 MW Generator test bed, High speed balancing facility, High speed blade manufacturing and Stator & Rotor coil manufacturing facility.

LMTG Product Line Up
LMTG is offering latest technology supercritical and ultra-supercritical turbines, specially designed to satisfy all possible customer requirements in terms of operating conditions, performance, availability and reliability.

Technology advantage
With regulatory body in India requiring high efficiency and low pollution technology, supercritical and ultra supercritical technology for fossil fuel based plants. It has higher thermal efficiency resulting in less fuel consumption & significant reduction in the emission of green house gases. Also large unit capacity, results in reduced operating cost, less land and water requirement.

L&T MHI steam Turbines and Generators come with following technical edge

  • Over five decades of experience of Mitsubishi group in Steam turbine and Generator manufacturing, having supplied more than 1600 units worldwide. (180GW)
  • Reference of more than 49 large sized units with supercritical/ultra supercritical parameters.(worldwide)
  • Continuous support from Mitsubishi group along with improved design for better performance & reliability.
  • High heat resistant alloys suitable for high steam parameters.
  • Very low level of Vibration.Combined HP and IP turbines up to 800MW.
  • Cooling of IP section for increased creep life of components.
  • Active clearance control in seals providing large clearances during startup / shut down and low clearances during load operation.
  • Water cooled stator coils and hydrogen cooled rotor field coils and core for compact generator.
  • Resin cone and top plate for tying all over hang stator coils for better vibration characteristics.

Head of design and engineering, A K Jain, turbine design veteran with 36 years experience, adds Hallmark of LMTG / MHI turbine is ultra-low vibration level during start up and normal running resulting from innovative Integral Shroud Blades (ISB) even in last LP Stage for superior vibration dampening

LMTG has received several orders from renowned customers such as APPDCL, Jaiprakash Power, MAHAGENCO, Nabha Power for supply of turbines and generators, and the company is in a process of completing the supply. Recently, acknowledging the capability and quality of LMTG, MHI has placed export orders with the company for the supply of Turbine to its international customers.

L&T-MHI Turbine Generators has several firsts to its credit. The country's first 800 MW supercritical turbine generator was manufactured by the company for Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited's Krishnapatnam power project. It is the only manufacturing company in India that is compliant with all five ISO standards and the first to receive ISO 50001 for energy management systems. The facility has adopted the total quality management systems since its inception and adheres to international quality standards. Being a safety first company, LMTG emphasis on environment, health and safety, have established stringent procedures for safe and high quality operations at its facility. British Safety Council awarded 5 star rating and Sword of Honour to company for best safety practices.

Subrat Kumar Das, CE and whole-time director, L&T-MHI Turbine Generators, says, "We inherit rich parentage of L&T and MHI and we are committed towards highest standards of quality and adherence to time schedules. LMTG is marching ahead successfully to indigenously manufacture complete Supercritical Turbines and Generators by end of 2013 The company believes that maximum indigenization of power plant equipment would ensure technological self-reliance for the country, thereby ending the dependence on imports.
