Floods may impact GVK hydel projects in Uttarakhand

The recent heavy rains and floods in Uttarakhand, which killed thousands of people and washed out property, may affect Hyderabad-based GVK Group's hydel projects in that state. The firm's upcoming 330 mw Srinagar hydel project at Pauri district in Uttarakhand may get affected by the floods. During recent floods in Uttarakhand, some water entered the power house at Srinagar hydroelectric power project. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities, GVK said in a statement.

The project in Srinagar, the largest city in Garhwal hills of the Himalayan state, was among areas affected in the calamity that caused large-scale devastation.

Based on the information available currently, there may be an impact of 2-3 months on the project. The company is, however, confident of making up to minimise the impact on the project and resolve the issue at the earliest, GVK said. A senior official of the Hyderabad-based infrastructure major said that efforts are on to get the work on track even before three months.

GVK is developing the project on the river Alaknanda in Tehri/ Pauri Garhwal district and its construction is nearing completion.
