Coal India gets 27 proposals from 16 cos for imported coal

Coal India (CIL) has received 27 proposals from 16 companies to get imported coal at discounted prices, a company official said. Accordingly, the company decided to issue request for proposals (RFPs) to 16 companies across the world for price and quantity quotes to supply coal from overseas mines. NC Jha, Chairman, CIL, said there is a huge gap of 450 MT (nearly a year's production) between the quantity that the company (Coal India) has promised to supply in the next 10 years to its domestic customers and what it can produce from its present and future mines and that this gap has to be met mostly from imports. He said that to bridge the gap either coal mines should be acquired abroad, which is time-consuming or supplies from other countries should be secured, which is what they are now doing.

Meanwhile, the company has set an internal target of 11 per cent growth in coal production in 2011-12 over the actual production in 2010-11 as against the 5 per cent growth mentioned in the memorandum signed with the coal ministry in March. Jha said that about 70 million tonne of stock had piled up due to transportation problems and that the Indian Railways had agreed to help out by providing extra rakes.
