TN has the capacity to up wind power generation: IWPA

The wind energy sector in Tamil Nadu has the capacity to scale up generation even with the existing installed capacity and evacuation infrastructure, says K Kasthurirangaian, Chairman of the Indian Wind Power Association. With more than 7,000 mw of installed wind energy capacity, the generation now is 2,465 mw (on July 3). During the wind season last year, 77 million units of wind energy were fed on some days.

As the southwest monsoon has been favourable, wind power generation can be increased to over 3,000 mw even with the existing evacuation system.

This can meet any shortfall that may arise in the event of shutdown of Neyveli power plants. Kasthurirangaian added that the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) had been clearing the pending payments to the wind energy generators in the State. The dues for March-April were being paid now. This benefited the wind energy sector greatly and the payment was almost on a real time basis.
