88,537 MW new power generation capacity targeted during 2012-17
Power Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia informed Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the Government of India plans to add 88,537 MW power generation capacity in the next five years. Out of this planned addition, thermal will contribute 72, 340 MW, 10,897 MW through Hydro and 5,300 MW power would be generated through Nuclear plants. The Government is gearing up to achieve the capacity addition target so as to meet the growing demand for power.
Scindia cited delay in land acquisition, contractual disputes between project proponents, contractors and their sub-contractors, slow execution of civil works, poor geology, law and order problems and regulatory issues as the major reasons for the shortfall in the achievement of eleventh plan capacity addition target.
