Transmission Company with Highest Growth in Network Creation in Private Sector - Sterlite Power Transmission

One of India's leading power transmission companies, Sterlite Power Transmission has four business units - infrastructure, solutions, convergence and IndiGrid. In the infrastructure space, the company sets up power transmission infrastructure on BOOM (Build, Own, Operate and Maintain) model. It has 11 projects in India and two in Brazil with a capital commitment of $2.5 billion. Of these, four projects are revenue generating and the rest are in various stages of commissioning. Its solutions business combines its differentiated products portfolio with specilised EPC services. Sterlite is a leading manufacturer of power cables and conductors, supplying to all major Indian states and private utilities, besides exporting to 40 countries. The company has four state-of-the-art manufacturing assets in Odisha, Uttarakhand and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Key success factors
Sterlite Power is a pioneer in introducing some of the best global practices in the Indian power transmission sector. It was the first Indian company to deploy an air crane to set up a power transmission line in the mountainous terrains of Jammu & Kashmir. The company has partnered with US-based Erickson Inc to install transmission towers in the Pir Panjal ranges using Erickson's S64 Aircrane, a heavy-lift helicopter. It will help Sterlite Power commission NRSS XXIX Transmission ahead of schedule and ensure power for all in Jammu & Kashmir, besides improving the reliability of the grid system.

Sterlite Power has always been at the forefront of new technologies. For the first time in India, the company used Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology which uses laser distance measuring technology to conduct topographic mapping with the help of aircraft. Transmitted from the aircraft, LiDAR beams are able to function in overcast and cloudy conditions, can penetrate dense vegetation and provide high accuracy at high speed. Such automation helps in optimising cost and time, and is far more efficient than manual surveys. Adding to it, the risk of project execution comes down significantly with the use of such technologies, unlike conventional technologies.

Sterlite Power has opted for Helicopter Stringing for the Bhopal-Indore 765 kV and Bhopal 400 kV power transmission lines of BDTCL project. Heli-stringing enables quick execution of installing cables, which otherwise is a tedious and time-consuming process. Moreover, it has reduced the project execution time and shortened transmission line shutdown time. It also renders minimal disturbance to the local community and the environment.

Performance highlights
In India, Sterlite Power either owns or maintains 11 inter-state power transmission projects with a total network of 39 power transmission lines of approximately 7,733 ckm and nine substations spanning across 19 states and having approximately 13,890 MVA of transformation capacity.

It has become the first Indian transmission company to enter Brazil. It is setting up two power projects in that nation on BOOM model.

Awards & achievements

Sterlite Power bagged two awards for 'Innovative Initiatives in the Power/Energy Sector' and 'Remarkable Projects' at 9th India Power Awards' by Council of Power Utilities.

Sterlite Power emerged a winner at the I.C.O.N.I.C û IDC Insights Awards 2016 in manufacturing and logistics vertical for displaying innovation and creativity in IT- Business Projects.

Sterlite power cable manufacturing plant at Haridwar bagged Indian Manufacturing Excellence Award from Frost & Sullivan for operational excellence.

Sterlite power conductor plant at Silvassa emerged as a winner for 'Process Innovation' in Project Evaluation and Recognition Programme from Frost & Sullivan.
